We often talk of videogames in terms of the narratives they present. A game’s story is seen as a necessary extension of gameplay, like the heart that resides within the body and keeps it in motion. Games like BioShock are praised for the narratives they present, and without them, the games amount to little more than standard fare.

Then there’s Limbo, which is minimalistic and vague in its storytelling while simultaneously offering one of the best experiences of the year, and not just because of its puzzle-solving gameplay. You never really know where you’re going, what you’re doing, or who you’re sharing the world of Limbo with, and because of this some might be swift to label the game’s story as lacking or even poor.

Those people are, of course, missing the point. Limbo presents one of the most engaging and sophisticated stories in videogame history, and it does so without giving you a solid idea of what the hell you’re doing.

And you thought that the consoles were only going to get the Warhammer 40,000 third-person shooter love, eh? That’s crazy, talk — THQ has announced this day that Warhammer: 40,000: Space Marine will hit Windows Computer, along with the previously announced versions for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

“The loyal Personal computer audience is incredibly important to us here at Relic,” says Jonathan Dowdeswell, General Manager at Relic Entertainment, the game’s developer, “so we’re delighted to announced the PC version of the game.”

Space Marines is Relic’s first-person take on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, mixing melee and ranged combat as players battle against the barbaric Orks. It’s out in early 2011.

Gears of War film still planned, getting re-worked

Gears of War film still planned, getting re-worked screenshot

The Gears of War film hit a bump in the road earlier this year when it was reported that director Len Wiseman skipped out on the project. Does that mean its dead in the water? Nah — in Hollywood, nothing ever really dies, and according to Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski, it’s still in the works.

Talking with The Movie Pool at Comic-Con this year, the designer said they’re currently taking a look at the script and prone to start from scratch. With the original film’s budget ballooning and studios not biting, Blezsinksi states they hope to take a different a approach, saying they’ like to make the film more like the successful sci-fi action flick, District 9.

I’m pretty confident a Gears of War film, in the right hands, could make for some fabulous summer blockbuster material. I’m also pretty sure that Bleszinski and company wouldn’t let this go awry; I have a gut feeling Epic is pretty careful with its properties. Sure, it might be a while before we see some live-action Locusts bursting from the core of a planet, only to get their faces chainsawed in half. But hey, that’s okay with me… as long as they get chainsawed in the face right.
