Bit.Trip mysteries: Perplexing photos from Gaijin Games

Bit.Trip mysteries: Perplexing pics from Gaijin Games screenshot

After interviewing three-man development team Gaijin Games at E3 09, I’ve been lucky enough to get periodic emails from the guys about their projects, their thoughts on various stuff, and whatever. It sometimes blows my mind that I get to treat people who I think about to be some of the most talented, interesting artists going today, like they’re “just some guys I email funny cat pictures to,” but there you go; being a game blogger is absolutely awesome.

As nice as it all is, any contact with game devs is risky business. For example, I might have overstepped my bounds a bit today. When asking Alex Neuse (Gaijin Games CEO) about two mysterious pics that recently popped up on the Gaijin Games homepage, one of a low-res rendition of Meat Boy, and another of a giant fan with a TV and framed artwork above it, I got this as a response:

Now where’s the Tron Knotts that I know and love? There’s more to that fan picture than you seem to have discovered. I refuse to comment on anything else until you redeem yourself. End of line.

END OF LINE?!?!?! SH*T!! It doesn’t get much more serious than that! If I’m going to get on Alex’s good side again, I better figure these pics out.

The Meat Boy photo most definitely relates to Bit.Trip hero Commander Video’s scheduled appearance in Super Meat Boy, but it could mean something more, right? As for the fan pic, the “black circle on blue” image on the TV certainly looks enjoy it relates to the “blue circle on black” artwork above it, and perhaps that very Bit.Trip-looking image to the lover left of the large fan has something to do with… something, but that’s all I got. My only other lead is that Alex recently told me that the next Bit.Trip game is “…turning out to be quite tubular. Even radical.” Is that code for something? Radical tubes in the next Bit.Trip confirmed?

Help me out here, people! I’m going nuts!

Custom Sculpey Boy and his Blob figure is not edible

Custom Sculpey Boy and his Blob figure is not edible screenshot

Whether you realize it or not, you’ve seen Sculpey around these parts quite a few times before. But if you’re still unfamiliar with the stuff, all you really need to know is that it’s a brand of clay polymer, quite popular among the custom toymaking crowd. And, much like Elmer’s school glue, I’ve never entirely grasped the fact that you’re not supposed to eat it. This custom Boy and His Blob figure does not help the matter.

Inspired by the cuddly visuals of WayForward’s upcoming remake, an artist by the name of Appy has created the delightful piece you see pictured above. Among others, there’s also an cute female rendition of the Engineer class from Team Fortress 2 to keep them company, and you can check out the whole bunch on this Flickr page.

Remarkable work indeed, and I almost had a hard time believing it wasn’t official merchandise. I’d say someone should give Appy a job making these into real figures to promote the game, but if I had this on my desk I can’t guarantee that I wouldn’t bite that kid’s sugary-looking head off and put that blob between a couple of graham crackers with a Hershey bar.

FIFA 10 gets dated and detailed, hitting stores on Oct. 2

FIFA 10 gets dated and detailed, hitting stores on Oct. 2 screenshot

When EA Sports’ FIFA 10 was announced, I was worried that the team at EA Canada wouldn’t be able to top this year’s effort. Well, they seem determined to prove me wrong, according to some new gameplay details announced alongside a new batch of screenshots (in the gallery).

Here are some improvements that have been made across all platforms:

  • First and foremost, FIFA 10 promises to get rid of a few glitches found in 09: specifically, every once in a while, some players will do this weird backpedaling movement and get kind of “stuck” on the ball. No more of that.
  • Some of 09’s star players — like Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o and Manchester United’s Christiano Ronaldo, among others — have been retooled, knocking them from “Godlike Supermen” to “normal dudes that happen to be good at kicking.”
